In reference to the discovery of America on October 12, 1492, this day has been kept as Spain's national holiday and a celebration of Hispanicity, marked by a military parade in Madrid. In Seville, this celebration is marked by a floral offering made in the cathedral and placed in front of the mausoleum that contains the body of Christopher Columbus. On the same day, a bullfight is also traditionally held in the Real Maestranza to benefit the Red Cross. This date also marks the beginning of the Puente del Pilar, in honor of the Virgin of Pilar
