Gymnasium founded under the reign of Augustus with an elevated gallery for spectators
The decumanus inferior, which separates the southern and northern quarters, leads to this huge gymnasium, built during the reign of Augustus. Partially cleared, it presents in its centre a cruciform basin, 35 m long, fed by a beautiful bronze fountain representing the hydra of Lerna (creature of the Greek mythology with multiple heads, beaten by Heracles during one of his twelve labours). Note also the west wing of the portico, 80 m long, with Corinthian columns. On the north side, a raised gallery was used for spectators during the games.
