This year, we are celebrating the anniversary of the landing at Ouistreham. The monument on the beach where are engraved the names of the 177 French commandos, placed under the orders of Commander Philippe Kieffer, also celebrates its 30th anniversary since it was inaugurated on June 6, 1984 by François Mitterrand. It is the work of a Caennaise woman, Yvonne Guégan, an outstanding artist in our region, who is at the same time a painter, ceramist and sculptor. In particular, she painted the painful moments of the Second World War, during the Liberation of Caen. We will also celebrate, in 2015, the 100th anniversary of his birth and the tenth anniversary of his death. We hope that a nice tribute will be paid to him. In the meantime, you can still visit his house in Caen. Get in there! Be curious, his imprint is incredibly stuck in the place..
Did you know that? Two models of the Kieffer Flame will be presented during the June 6 ceremonies to the President of the Republic, François Hollande and Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom. These models are designed in the workshops of Yvonne Guégan's museum.
Did you know yet? Two streets (one in St Lô, one in Colombelles), a square (in May-sur-Orne), an establishment (in Hérouville-Saint-Clair), and, since Friday 23 May 2014, a square in the Venoix district of Caen are named after Yvonne Guégan.
