SONNWENDFEUER (FEUX DU SOLSTICE)
Solstice fires have a long tradition in Southern Bavaria and Austria. The spectacle in Grainau is unforgettable.
Solstice fires have a long tradition in Southern Bavaria and Austria. They celebrate the beginning of summer. This is also the case in Grainau, a village in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There is one small but important difference: unlike in other places and communities, the event takes place on the eve of St. John's Day, i.e. on the night of 23 June. On that night, the Waxenstein massif is transformed into a string of lights. An unforgettable spectacle!
