Lao New Year's Day coincides with the first rains. The Laotians go down in the street and sprinkle themselves with water.
The popular water festival (Solar New Year) lasts more than a week and everything is then closed. It coincides with the renewal of nature and the appearance of the first rains. It marks the Buddhist and Lao New Year, and on this occasion special rites are planned. There is a big cleaning of the houses, dancing and fun. The faithful sprinkle the Buddha statues with water and place fruit, flowers and incense in the temples as offerings. The Laotians go down to the street and sprinkle themselves with water.
