Practical information : Move & Laze around Finnish Lapland
Budget & Tips
In Lapland, nature is everywhere, and even the national parks and nature reserves are freely accessible. All you need is a bit of equipment to set off on a trek, trail, bike, bivouac or even cross-country ski or snowshoe! In summer, cross-country skiers can practice their cross-country skiing skills on roller skates for the coming season. Lapland is a fabulous playground for outdoor sports enthusiasts.
What's very local
In winter, dog sledding or ski joëring, snowmobiling, cross-country and cross-country skiing, and hole fishing are the main activities for locals. Some go sea kayaking and surfing on the coast, even in winter. In summer, hiking, biking, trekking and trail running are all on the menu! In Lapland, there are plenty of reindeer farms, spas, saunas and ice hotels. Experience all four! In summer, take a boat trip along the coast to see the whales!
Your documents please
You'll need your ID and driver's license to drive a quad, snowmobile or motorcycle... Remember, it's mandatory. For fishing, remember to get a license. Find out more at your local tourist office.
To be booked
If you're going away in the high winter or summer season, we strongly advise you to book all the activities you plan to do in advance. Prices don't come down, and places go fast.
Main events
Don't miss the winter lasso throwing competitions. Several are organized during traditional Saami festivals. And don't miss the very special winter swimming race! An event that will have you chattering your teeth. Finnmarksløpet is the world's most northerly sled dog race. It takes place every year in early March, finishing in Alta.
