On this occasion, demons are hunted and amulets from the past year are burned. The year begins auspiciously.
Setsubun is the last day before the arrival of spring, and thus of the traditional New Year. On this occasion, celebrations take place in the country's main temples. The Yoshida Jinja celebration in Kyoto is particularly well known. During Setsubun, soybeans, known as "seeds of fortune", are thrown into homes and temples to the cry of: "Demons, outside. Fortune, inside", to chase away evil before the start of the new year. Demon dances are also part of the program.
