Nariaiji temple is part of the Shingon sect, an esoteric Japanese Buddhist school. It was originally located at the top of Tsuzumigatake, but was moved to its present location after a landslide about 250 years ago. It is one of the 33 temples that make up the Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage. The main object of worship at the temple is a carved wooden statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of compassion, dating from the Heian period. Further down the slope is a five-storey pagoda, rebuilt in the late 1990s.
