And why not celebrate New Year's Eve on January 13th? In this village in Pembrokeshire, we hold on to this old tradition!
Head to the small village of Cwm Gwaun, Pembrokeshire to celebrate Hen Galan, the Orthodox New Year, on 13 January. And if the New Year here seems to be a few days late, it is because it is still based on the old Julian calendar. A calendar set up by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. It was somewhat controversially abolished in 1752 and replaced by the Gregorian calendar, approved by Pope Gregory XIII almost 200 years earlier. But here, however, changes are resisted and the tradition continues. On this day, children go from door to door, collecting sweets or money, while singing a typical little song.
