At the end of the 2 000 th century, the village of Keomuku was populated by people working for the sugar industry, the Maunalei Sugar company. The company went bankrupt in a short time and, in the first half of the twentieth century, the region gradually emptied its inhabitants. From the village, there is only its wooden church, the «Ka Lanakila O Ka Malamalama», which has been retapée by volunteers and can be visited.
