Timetable

In town, cafés often open from Monday to Saturday as early as 7am, and close around 9pm. There are sometimes happy hours for cocktails in the mid-afternoon or early evening. On the beaches, beach clubs are open every day (apart from the very low season), from 9 or 10 a.m. until around 7 or 8 p.m., but sometimes much later when they are party venues.

Budget & Tips

On average, a draught beer costs around $30 (€1.50); double that for a craft or imported beer. A coffee: around $15-20, a cappuccino: $40-50. Natural fruit juice: around $30-40.

Age restrictions

The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18. An identity document may be requested to verify your age if you look a little too juvenile (a photocopy of your passport is sufficient; leave the original in a safe place).

What's very local

In the evening, people gather in bars, most of which serve food to be shared between guests. This is the botana mexicana, the equivalent of the tapa in Spain. It takes many different forms, but above all means something to nibble and share over a drink: the famous and innumerable papas (chips), tostadas, chicharrones (grilled pigskin), jalapeños rellenos, tacos, quesadillas, guacamoles...

Kids

Children are allowed in cafés, bars and beach clubs selling alcohol, provided they are accompanied by a parent.

Smokers

As in restaurants, smoking is not permitted on the terrace or in front of the establishment. Smoking areas are rare, as Mexicans are not big smokers.
