TAXIARCHON MONASTERY
The original monastery was founded in 1572 in honour of the Archangel Michael and Gabriel (these "taxiarques" are thus considered celestial generals) and has long sheltered a large monastic community. Today, it is still in operation but is operating at reduced speed.... In the heart of the superb marble paved courtyard, the church is open to visitors. You will see a magnificent iconostasis dating back to 1600 and whose wood has been finely carved. Also note the beautiful display in Syrian marquetry with mother-of-pearl inlays. It was offered to the monastery at the beginning of the 16th century. Before leaving the place, don't miss a visit to the rooftops of the living areas: the view of the northeast coast of the island and the Aegean Sea is splendid
