Covering 89 km², Sifnos has a gentle charm, slightly softened by the mountains that protect the natural port of Kamares. Long renowned for its weaving and pottery workshops, the island has managed to preserve its authenticity and remain untouched by mass tourism. As part of the Cyclades chain of paradise islands, it attracts many artists who have made it their haven. Here's a closer look at the island's must-sees.

1. Apollonia

Situated 6 kilometers from the port, the capital has taken its name, since 1836, from the pre-Christian times when the inhabitants of the island of Sifnos worshipped Apollo. Apollonia has grown considerably over the years, to the point where it now joins the neighboring village of Artemonas. Ideally situated in the heart of the island, it is above all its nerve center. Its cobbled streets are charming, as are the flower-decked Cycladic houses and the magnificent panoramic views. In the evening, the main thoroughfare, the Steno, winds its way through the town. Stores, cafés, bars and restaurants invite you to enjoy the warm atmosphere of Sifnos' capital.

In the chain of heavenly Cycladic islands, the monastery of Vrissi (or Vrissiani), the largest on the island of Sifnos, is a veritable haven of serenity. The path leading to the monastery runs through lush vegetation, providing a striking contrast to the dazzling whiteness of the walls. Built in the 17th century, it now houses a museum of ecclesiastical and Byzantine art. Dedicated to the Virgin of Vrissi, also known as the Virgin of the Spring, the monastery offers a breathtaking view from its white dome.

3. Artemonas

Artemonas, Apollonia's immediate neighbor, is well worth a visit. It is home to some of the island's most beautiful mansions, belonging to great shipowning families. A pleasant stroll will take you to Poulati, a wild cove with craggy rocks, popular with naturists, some 4 kilometers away. Artemonas reveals all its charm early in the morning, when the village gently awakens under the soft light of dawn. At night, the neoclassical villas and their secret gardens, bathed in an almost dreamlike atmosphere, are a delight to stroll through. An artistic community gathers here several months a year, adding a unique touch to this preserved treasure.

Kastro is the only place on the island to have preserved its medieval character, offering spectacular panoramic views over the Aegean Sea. Nestled in the heart of the mountains, the village faces the sea, creating a unique setting. Its narrow streets, sometimes formed by terraced houses, give it the appearance of a natural amphitheatre. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the site retains some fascinating remains: ancient columns built into the houses, the ruins of a fortified wall erected to repel pirates, and several remarkable Byzantine churches. For a refreshing break, take the steps down to Seralia, a pebble beach ideal for a peaceful swim.

5. Platis Gialos

Platis Gialos, the island's largest sandy beach, is very popular, with umbrellas and deckchairs lining the bay. Despite the crowds, it retains an undeniable charm. The cafés, tavernas and restaurants lining the shore offer a friendly atmosphere, with your feet in the sand. Nearby, don't miss a visit to the Panaghia tou Vounou church, perched high above the village. The panoramic view of Platis Gialos and the island of Kimolos from its courtyard is simply breathtaking. This monastery, built on the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Artemis, is home to a legendary icon of the Virgin Mary. For a unique experience, it's possible to stay in the ancient monastic cells while enjoying the terrace offering a breathtaking view of Platis Gialos.

This rocky promontory, connected to the land by a few stones, is home to the church of Panagia Chrysopigi, dedicated to the Virgin of Chrysopigi ("Source of Gold") and built in 1650. Chrysopigi is the emblematic site of Sifnos and one of the most famous and photographed on the island. Its majestic setting, enhanced by the changing hues of the sky and sea, makes it an enchanting place. To the left of the church, the sandy beach of Apokofto beckons with its clear turquoise waters. For a more peaceful swim, the rocks surrounding the promontory offer quiet spots. On the right, the slightly sheltered rocks of Saoures are particularly pleasant on windy days.

7. Vathy

On either side of the Taxiarchis monastery, the magnificent bay of Vathy seems to stretch on forever. This fine sandy beach, which could have been included in our ranking of the most beautiful places in Greece, with its shady corners and shallow sea sheltered from the winds, is the ideal refuge when the meltemi blows elsewhere. Vathy retains an authentic charm and a peaceful, largely family atmosphere. In season, it welcomes mainly sailboats, adding a touch of elegance and a sense of nostalgia, as if time had stood still. For history buffs, the nearby archaeological site of Agios Andreas is considered one of the most important on the island of Sifnos.

8. Cheronissos

This charming village, where time seems to stand still, is the ideal place for those looking for a real break. Here, calm reigns supreme, and visitors can immerse themselves in an authentic atmosphere. If you're just passing through, don't miss the sunset. Faros is a picturesque fishing port where, from early morning, fishermen are busy cleaning their nets under the watchful eye of dozens of cats. A few guest houses and seaside tavernas give this village an authentic Greek, family atmosphere. Those in search of authenticity will find a little corner of paradise, seemingly straight out of the 1960s. The Faros seafront boasts a succession of small sandy beaches, shaded and shallow, ideal for families. Crossing the harbor and climbing a hill to the left, you'll discover Fassolou, a larger beach, just as charming and also lined with shade.

10. What to do on Sifnos Go to Kamares

Arriving in Kamares by boat is an impressive sight, although at first glance the harbor may seem lacking in charm. Nestled at the end of a bay surrounded by rugged mountains, Kamares is nonetheless attractive for its large, pleasant beach, ideal for families thanks to its shallow waters. The atmosphere is particularly warm, especially in the late afternoon and evening. People gather here to admire the sunset, before extending the moment in one of the many seaside restaurants, sometimes with their feet in the sand. The port is also home to some of the island's oldest churches.

11. Hiking

While this island might be an ideal destination for a romantic weekend in Europe, it's also a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. With over 100 kilometers of marked trails, Sifnos stands out as a must-see destination for walkers. The municipal association Sifnos Trails plays a key role in promoting hiking on the island and maintaining the trails every year. It also provides a detailed trail map, available from the tourist office. Some short, easy hikes (under 30 minutes) are even suitable for the whole family, using stony but accessible paths. Whether you're an experienced hiker or an occasional walker, Sifnos offers some great nature walks.

12. Relaxation and water sports

Even the most beautiful of the Greek islands may not be the Caribbean or the Great Barrier Reef, but they remain an eternal Eldorado for bathers. Scuba diving, offered by a wide range of schools, is widely practiced. The waters are incredibly crystal-clear and it's a real pleasure to spend an afternoon sunbathing on the sand between two swims. Water sports are also very popular in high season. Kayaking, paddleboarding and pedal-boating are just some of the activities on offer.

To book: Enjoy a private speedboat cruise in the Aegean Sea by booking this excrusion from Sifnos to visit the spectacular uninhabited island of Poliegos. You'll swim, snorkel and dive like you've never done before!

Original and hearty, Greek cuisine is based on Mediterranean fruits and vegetables (olive oil, peppers, eggplants, citrus fruits...). The herbs and freshness of the produce create highly aromatic flavors. There are similarities with Turkish cuisine, with both countries claiming the same influences. Mezzes, served with ouzo as an aperitif or at the start of a meal, are an assortment of starters for several people, and are one of the culinary specialties to be discovered in Greece. Each person picks and chooses from an often impressive selection of dishes. They can be a meal in themselves, and are always a treat!
