Even if Santa Claus comes on the 31st, it is an opportunity to share delicacies like melomakarona and kourabiedes.

Less important than Easter, Christmas is nevertheless celebrated in Greece. Signs of westernization in this eastern land, Christmas trees, decorations and gifts have made their appearance in Greek homes. However, traditionally, it is rather St. Basil who plays Santa Claus on the evening of December 31. Christmas is the occasion to share delicacies such as melomakarona cakes, egg-shaped and flavored with honey and olive oil, and kourabiedes, almond shortbread sprinkled with powdered sugar.
