August is the peak of religious festivities in the Dodecanese islands, not only for the veneration of the Virgin Mary on August 15, but also for a whole series of other local saints and prodigies, including the miraculous icon of Panagia tou Harou, which gives rise to two days of celebrations in Lipsi (August 22 and 23). The celebration of the beheading of St. John the Baptist (August 29) is another highlight, notably at the Agios Ioannis monastery in Halki, and in the troglodyte church of Vrokounda (the largest three-day celebration on Karpathos).
