A unique opportunity to discover the harvesting of saffron on the island of Astipalaia, an ancient tradition specific to the butterfly island.
Astipalaia is known for its wild saffron, which grows in the upper parts of the butterfly island. At the beginning of November, the women leave to harvest the flower whose dried stigmas produce the most expensive spice in the world. This small purple crocus flower, the crocus sativus, grows up to 20-30 centimetres before it is ready for picking, which is done exclusively by hand. The beginning of the harvest is accompanied by a small celebration. Men are not excluded from picking, but traditionally it was a job done by women.
