The martyr-island of Psara solemnly commemorates the massacre that took place on the island in 1824, during the war of independence. Destroyed and massacred by the Ottoman fleet in retaliation for the deeds of the local captain Konstantinos Kanaris, Psara remembers its heroes and its dead. For the occasion, today's children climb the black hill, Mavro Rachi, carrying a torch in memory of the women and children who committed suicide there to escape slavery. Songs and celebrations take place for two days, around June 22.
