We know the bonfires of St. John over which the young people of our country are traditionally invited to jump. In Thassos, the tradition is to jump over these bonfires on July 31, to mark the passage to August1 and call for abundant summer crops ("figs, nuts and grapes against winter fever!"). The ashes from the fires are then preserved and spread at the foot of the trees so that they keep their fruits longer. It is also a way of calling to oneself health and well-being for the rest of the year.
