This Hindu religious festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring; colored powders and water are thrown at each other.
The famous festival of colors is celebrated during the full moon of the month of Phalguna in the Hindu calendar. This date falls in February or March of our calendar. We throw colored pigments at each other, each with a specific meaning: green for harmony, red for love and passion, blue to celebrate life, orange for faith in a brighter tomorrow, and so on. This is how we celebrate the spring equinox. It's one of the oldest Indian festivals, perpetuated by the country's Hindustani population, but one in which the whole population participates!
