All Spain celebrates the twelve strokes of midnight by eating a grape at each stroke. A guarantee of good luck to come.
On New Year's Eve, many festivities revolve around religious themes and there is a lot of noise, a way to chase away the old demons and face the new ones. On the evening of December 31, Catalonia, like all of Spain, eats a grape at the stroke of midnight. This ritual, often accompanied by fireworks, is a guarantee of good luck for the new year, which is accomplished during the Nit de Cap d'Any (the old night). This festivity takes place one week after the night of Christmas Eve, the Nit de Nadal (Good Night).
