Practical information : Going out Zanzibar Archipelago
Timetable
There are very few clubs in Zanzibar, and you don't come here to party the night away. However, there are a few in Stone Town (Tatu and Bwawani Nightclub) that close in the early hours. There's also the electro-oriented B4 club in Pajé, which hosts one or two parties that go on until 4 a.m. on Saturdays (and Tuesdays in season), and the Jambo Club, next door, on Fridays. But with the locals living right next to the beaches, there's no heavy bass until the morning. The Masai Mara in Jambiani also organizes parties until very late, as it's isolated at the end of the coast. Kendwa Rocks holds a monthly full moon party that goes on until very late.
Budget & Tips
The Masai Mara and Kendwa Rocks organise electro-boat trips, where the sound is laid on a sandbank, which only scares the fish away! A good plan to party.
To be booked
We don't really recommend booking your festival tickets in advance, as there are always tickets on sale on the night, but with Zanzibar's growing popularity, this may soon change. On the other hand, if you'd like to attend the taarab dinner and concert at the Emerson Spice, make a reservation - this show is in great demand, even though it takes place every night, as there are only a few places available. Taarab concerts at the DCMA or the Blues Club in Stone Town are always sold out.
Night transport
Cabs are the only option. They are more expensive at night, but totally essential for getting around Stone Town, from Pajé to Jambiani, from Michamvi Kae to Michamvi Pingwe, from Nungwi to Kendwa, etc.
Age restrictions
There are no restrictions, but young boys and girls here don't go out in clubs. They're more likely to be locals or seasonal workers in their twenties. There's no age control at club entrances.
What's very local
A concert at Zanzibar's DCMA taarab club is a highlight not to be missed. Depending on the day, the evening may be more Ngoma, Afro-jazz, traditional taarab, etc., so check out the website (www.zanzibarmusic.org).
Smokers
You can smoke in the clubs, as there is no anti-smoking legislation. Generally speaking, the locals don't smoke much.
