The constellation of the Pleiades (literally "Matarii") has always been particularly decisive in the Polynesian tradition. In the past, the year was divided into two main seasons, marked by two dates: Matarii i ni'a from 20 November, when the season of abundance began, and Matarii i raro around 20 May, which corresponded to the beginning of the famine season. Even today, the transition from one period to the next is celebrated with fervour.
