The Sarawak Dayak festival, previously banned by the British government, celebrates the start of the rice harvest.
The Sarawak Dayak festival celebrates the start of the rice harvest. It was banned by the British government, which did not want a festival celebrated by only some of Sarawak's inhabitants. The festival was incorporated into the Sarawak public holiday calendar in 1965, and although it only concerns the Dayak community, the day is observed as a public holiday by all Sarawak residents. Members of the community give thanks to the rice god for the precious harvest and obtain his favor for the following year's harvest.
