THE BURGUNDY REGIONAL COUNCIL IN CHARGE OF ITS CANALS
For two years, the Regional Council has supported its channels: the Nivernais Canal, the Centre Canal, the Bourgogne Canal and the Fit waterway. With over 1000 km of inland waterways, Burgundy has the largest network of inland waterways in France. However, these channels now suffer from a chronic maintenance deficit and require significant rehabilitation efforts (rehabilitation of works, consolidation of the banks, etc.). Thus, in order to give new impetus to these high-potential tourist routes, the Regional Council has chosen to experiment with management for three years. This situation is unique in France! The Region has set three main objectives: the protection of the Burgundian heritage, the development of river tourism around canals, the preservation of a water resource estimated at over 150 million m 3. If the experience is positive, the Region will then be able to decide on the transfer after two or three years. In 2010 and 2011, the Region invested more than € 21 M for canal rehabilitation.
