Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's largest city after Sao Paulo, is world-famous for its carnival, beaches and iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer. It was Brazil's capital until 1960. With over 6 million inhabitants within its walls and more than 12 million in the urban area, Rio de Janeiro is a major metropolis in South America. The city boasts many must-see tourist attractions, including Corcovado, Sugar Loaf, the historic center, Copacabana, the Botanical Gardens, Lapa, the Maracanã stadium and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.
