Calvisson
Crossed by the Escatte river, Calvisson is a sight to behold! At the bend in the streets, admire the facades and doors with dated stone lintels. Mullioned windows, sculpted keystones, sundials, carriage doors, are all details that enliven the streets of the old village. The numerous wash houses are a reminder of the work of the women and the convivial moments during these meetings. The temple and its imposing columns underline the Protestant past of the city, and the witnesses of the architecture of the XIXth century underline the rise taken by the city thanks to the culture and the wine trade.
Thus, at the start of the town, walk along the monumental fresco retracing the history of the vineyard which borders the cooperative cellar of Calvisson and the vestiges of the railway era. Make an instructive stop at the Oenopole: an interpretation centre about vines and wine, the different areas highlight 27 centuries of human adventure around the cultivation of the vine and its marketing. From the fabulous deposit of amphora shards discovered in the north of Calvisson, to the current cellar still in activity, the Vinopanorama highlights the importance of this culture in the past of the city but also in the dynamism of its present.
Continue on to Aujargues where you will find yourself in a perfect setting of vineyards and olive groves bordered by dry stone walls. On the left, a panorama of the Cévennes mountain range with the Pic Saint-Loup reminds you of the omnipresence of nature in this area.
Cross the perched village of Souvignargues. At the exit of this pretty circulade, admire a beautiful capitelle recently restored then after a small rise, a plunging sight is offered to you.Saint-Etienne d'Escattes
Nestled in a cradle of greenery with the Cevennes as a backdrop, one can make out the hamlet of Saint-Etienne d'Escattes. Built around the Romanesque church, the houses of this hamlet reveal their picturesque charm. Then wind your way through wooded hills and vineyards to Calvisson and its old streets. On the square, don't miss a visit to the Maison du Boutis, a museum retracing the history of this ancestral skill that is the volume embroidery of the Bas-Languedoc.
