Every August 31, Afro-Caribbean multiculturalism is celebrated throughout the country, especially in the province of Limón.
In the 1980s, Costa Rica decreed August 31 as "Día del Negro y la Cultura Afrocostarricense" (Day of the Black and Afro-Costa Rican Culture). In 2018, a law declared August as the historical month of Afrodescendence in Costa Rica. Thus, the Afro-Caribbean culture is celebrated throughout the country. Concerts, shows, conferences, exhibitions are organized throughout the country, especially on the Caribbean coast where the majority of Costa Ricans live.
