Business opening hours vary widely. Opening hours are not institutionalized like in Europe. Shops open in the morning and close in the evening, around 7pm or later in the big cities. Stores very rarely close on Sundays, and the only days they are closed during the year are those following the Têt (New Year) holiday, when the whole country takes a short annual break.
Vietnam is not yet a preferred destination for shopping enthusiasts, nor can it compete with other Southeast Asian capitals - Bangkok or Singapore - known for their oversized shopping malls, veritable temples to consumerism. But Vietnam has become one of the world's factories, and it's possible to get a good deal on certain products: sports shoes, luggage, clothing... You'll also find some superb handicrafts, and you can have your shirts, dresses and pants made to measure at low prices.
In Vietnam, haggling is an integral part of business relations. You need to know the price range and try to reach the lowest limit. If your price range is wrong, you'll either lose out by overpaying, or offend your counterpart by offering too low a price. He'll leave the game immediately. If you use patience and humor, you'll win. Note that in some "Westernized" shops, prices are fixed. The customer is made aware of this fact.
Watch out for counterfeit goods! When it comes to brands, beware of bargains that can cost you dearly when you return home through French customs.
