Without doubt the most important Hindu festival of the year. At nightfall, candles are lit in front of all the houses to celebrate the return of Ra in his kingdom Ayodhya, after his victory over the demon Ravana. Many firecrackers are set off in order to chase away demons and evil spirits. Lakshmi, a goddess invoked for fortune, is also celebrated. Traders start new books of accounts. Everyone wishes each other Shubh Labh or "Good Fortune". In West Bengal, the festival is called Kali Puja because it is dedicated to the goddess Kali and not to the goddess Lakshmi as in most of the country. Here too, it is the reign of firecrackers.
