The Festival of Lights is the most moving of the Hindu calendar. Houses are lit up with luminous lights for the New Year.

Diwali, or Deepavali, is the "Festival of Lights". It is the most important festival of the Hindu calendar which marks the beginning of the new year. The festivities last 5 days: they begin 2 days before the date(Dhanteras) and end 2 days after(Bhai Dooj). At night, candles are lit in front of all the houses to celebrate the return of Rama to his kingdom Ayodhya, after his victory over the demon Ravana. Many firecrackers are set off in order to chase away demons and evil spirits. Lakshmi, goddess invoked for fortune, is also celebrated.
