Brothers and sisters exchange gifts traditionally representing their mutual responsibilities in each other's lives.

Raksha Bandhan means "the bond of protection" in Sanskrit. Sisters tie a talisman on their brothers' wrists, symbolizing a bond of protection, and in return receive a gift that traditionally represents the brothers' responsibility to their sisters' well-being. Then they celebrate their affection in the street in very demonstrative ways. This festival is followed by Hindus, but also by Jains and Sikhs. This festival is also known as Rakhi in Kerala.
