To coincide with Rugby World Cup France 2023, the Sir John Monash Centre opened a new free temporary exhibition on August 15, running until November 5, 2023. Into the Scrum: Rugby in the First World War explores the links between rugby and the First World War through a selection of archival photos, posters and videos.
The exhibition shows how propaganda set rugby players up as role models and led many to enlist. It also presents rare photos of teams and rugby matches organized in the rear during non-combat times.
Dans la mêlée: Le rugby pendant la Première guerre mondiale pays tribute to all those men, players and soldiers, and presents images of another aspect of the First World War - behind the front line, where soldiers can, for the duration of a rugby match, forget the horror of the battlefield.
