Practical information : Move & Laze around Bali
Budget & Tips
Massages. You can find them everywhere: in specialized salons, in hotel spas (luxury ones, but not only), on the beach... It's important to remember, however, that you're often paying for the setting: a massage in the local palace won't necessarily be any better than the one given by the old lady on the beach... And don't forget that the beach offers massages, not other, far less noble services.
What's very local
Diving. Bali has never been considered Indonesia's most beautiful dive site. The waters are sometimes murky and the coral has suffered from ocean pollution. Nevertheless, there are many places worth a visit. The most famous dive sites are to be found on the east coast, between Sanur and the northeast near Tulamben and Amed. The islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are rich in flora and fauna. In the far west, the uninhabited and protected island of Menjangan appears to be one of the most beautiful dive sites, while the 7,000-hectare coral reef of Bali Barat National Park, not far from Gilimanuk and Menjangan, is full of surprises.
For deep diving, you'll need to get in touch with local diving organizations and don't forget your diving qualifications. Contact them as soon as you arrive, or make a reservation specifying your skills and technical level. This will enable the organizers to form homogeneous groups. Major certifications such as PADI, SSI, CMAS and POSSI are recognized.
In addition to dance and music, which most Balinese learn from an early age, they also enjoy buffalo racing and cockfighting. Some are also passionate about domestic bird singing competitions. In all these activities, the Balinese love to gamble.

Diving courses. Many of Bali's diving centers welcome certified divers, but few offer the technical possibility of certification. Several centers offer introductory courses that include theory and practice in shallow water.
Be clear-headed enough not to accept dives beyond 12 m from your instructors if you are a beginner. They don't have sufficient means of rescue in case of trouble. If you're an experienced diver, you'll soon realize how amateurish some centers are. All you need to do is go to an experienced center with top-quality, brand-new equipment. Introductory courses are generally inexpensive, and should not cost more than US$ 50 per dive.
