Since prehistoric times, man has shaped the landscape of a difficult land that has never been a land of abundance. This immense work, inventive and constantly renewed by nature and man, as well as the blend of Alpine and Mediterranean influences that are extremely prolific for flora and fauna, today makes up the recognized and the remarkable richness of the region. It attracts around one million visitors each year. It offers the largest European canyons, but also the largest geological reserves, the most beautiful museums of prehistory in Quinson, and one of the purest skies of France. The region which relied on hydropower for its electricity supply has five dams that recycle rushing water from the Verdon stream. This led to the creation of 5 beautiful lakes - Esparron, Quinson, Sainte Croix, Chaudanne and Castillon - and which collects the remaining pure water of the rivers. Seen from the Valensole plateau, the Sainte Croix lake offers a beautiful and breath-taking panorama. A few kilometres from its 2200 hectares water retention dam is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France called Moustiers -Sainte- Marie, setup against a cliff and famous in the world for its manufacture of pottery. It is at the crossroads of these deep gorges and lavender plateaus that authentic country restaurants have given the region a deserved gastronomic reputation. For those who love climbing, there is a cliff in the department that fit your needs and your level. Verdon is known for offering some of the most beautiful routes in Europe every season.
