The highlight of the racing season is the popular Dubai World Cup, held at the Meydan Racecourse, which opened in 2010 and has the world's largest grandstand with a capacity of over 60,000. The day hosts 9 races, eight of which are reserved for thoroughbreds and the last for Arabian thoroughbreds. With a prize of US$12 million for the winner of the cup, it is one of the best endowed horse races on the planet and an event always followed by the sovereign of Dubai, a horse enthusiast.
