JUMIRAH MOSQUE
A visit to understand everything about the foundations of Islam and its traditions and to ask all the questions without taboo!
One of the only two mosques accessible to non-Muslims in Dubai and proudly displayed on the AED 500 banknotes. The architecture of this building completed in 1978 is inspired by the Fatimid style, named after the dynasty that ruled Egypt between 909 and 1171. It has a massive and fortified exterior, with few openings and crenellations. The minarets seem powerful, with their very high square base. The naves are parallel to the qibla in the prayer hall. The decoration is sober, but the stucco work is extremely elaborate. The prayer hall is a large space, non-hierarchical, uncluttered, but pleasant (quality materials, electronic Koran). Its night lighting makes the mosque shine by giving it a golden glow. The interest to go there is undoubtedly for the guided tours of questions and answers on Islam. After having been able to eat with some local specialties, hospitality obliges, the visit begins with a description of the rite of ablutions, obligatory preliminary to the prayer and which takes place outside the mosque. It continues inside with an explanation of the course of the prayer and, more generally, a reminder of the foundations of Islam. Then, in English, visitors are invited to ask all questions related to Islam, without any taboo. The Emiratis who answer them are all volunteers. It is better to come respecting a dress code: shoulders and knees covered, long sleeves. A veil is lent to women.
