DIFC
A remarkable enclave inaugurated in 2004, with numerous art galleries and trendy, refined restaurants.
The Dubai International Financial Centre is not only the largest financial center in the Middle East. It's a remarkable enclave combining architecture, industrial design, interior spaces and gardens. It is also home to the Gate Village art galleries and many trendy, refined restaurants. Inaugurated in 2004, it consists of three zones where architects have competed in ingenuity to transform the 48 hectares into a pedestrian district, lively both during the day and at night. The "Arc de Triomphe", a 15-storey Gate building, stands out from the 3 zones, offering an astonishing view of Dubai's first skyscraper, the World Trade Center, in the distance, and the twin Emirates Towers opposite. The 8-storey buildings surrounding the Gate building are built above arcades protected from the sun by a set of steel panels and canvases. Wooden bridges provide access to the Gate Village, designed by Hopkins & Partners. Inspired by the city of Shibam in Yemen and the Creek in Dubai, they imagined these narrow streets with arcades that are well protected from the sun, making the whole project rather eco-responsible. Moucharabiehs with contemporary arabesques stand out on the balconies of the buildings. DIFC's 15,000 employees, with their city-like profile, stroll through this car-free space all year round, as do the many residents who stroll through in the evenings.
