History History
The department of Périgueux or Périgord was created by decision of the Constituent Assembly on 25 January 1790. It was only a month later that the name Dordogne was retained after the adoption of the list of French departments. The Dordogne department is made up of almost all of the former province of Périgord (786048 hectares), and part of the Agenais (99250 hectares), both belonging to the former Guyenne, as well as part of a portion of the Limousin (25858 hectares) and the Angoumois (30250 hectares). Since 1972, when the regions were created, the Dordogne has been attached to Aquitaine. Today, it is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region which also includes the former Poitou-Charentes and Limousin regions. Following the recent regrouping of communes, 11 new ones have been created in the Dordogne. The history of this territory goes back to the Palaeolithic period
