Valence and the surrounding area
Steps: Valence
Morning: Start your mini-tour of the Drôme with a visit to Valence, say hello to the Peynet kiosk on the Champ, visit the pedestrianized old town and head back towards the cathedral to reach the Musée d'art et d'archéologie de Valence.
Lunch: Choose from tacos, wraps, a portion of fries, bubble-tea and tiramisu at Chamas Tacos, to be eaten on site or in the Champ de Mars, just across the street.
Afternoon: Drive along the Rhône to Tain-l'Hermitage, to visit its two jewels: the Cité du Chocolat Valrhôna, 100% chocolate for the whole family, and the Cave de Tain, a superb wine cooperative.
Evening: Choose a wine bar in the town center for a tasting dinner, or a small restaurant on the quayside.
Romans-sur-Isère and surroundings
Steps: Valence
Morning: Head for Romans-sur-Isère, to see the collegiate church of Saint-Barnard reflected in the Isère, stroll along the rue de l'Armaillerie, the Josaphat staircase, the Place aux Herbes, pass the Calvaire des Récollets, the mansions of the wealthy 15th-century clothmakers and the Jacquemart. Stop off at the Musée International de la Chaussure, the Cité de la Chaussure and its craftsmen, and Marque Avenue, with its factory outlets for the major labels. Shopping!
Lunch at La Villa Margot, just opposite Marques Avenue, invites you to a charming stopover in a private mansion set in its own park.
Afternoon: Head north to Hauterives and its jewel of monumental naive art, the Palais du facteur Cheval, the work of former letter carrier Ferdinand Cheval (1836-1924). An enchantment!
Evening: Return to Valence for dinner and overnight stay.
Tournon-sur-Rhône and surroundings
Steps: Tain-L'Hermitage
Morning: Cross the Rhône to Tournon and the Ardèche, just opposite Tain-l'Hermitage. Visit the Tournon-sur-Rhône castle-museum, whose collections range from the Renaissance to the present day, and include objects linked to river navigation, the history of the castle and the town, as well as sculptures, paintings, drawings and engravings...
Lunch: Stock up on local produce at Distri'Ferm, a local farm store, and prepare a picnic in the park.
Afternoon: Head for Le Cheylard to visit the Maison du bijou, which reveals the long local tradition of the jewelry trade, the techniques used in jewelry making, collectors' items, original creations and testimonials. Continue along this Vallée du bijou to the Atelier du bijou in Saint-Martin-de-Valamas, where the craftsmen will open their doors to you. Beware of the risk of falling in love!
Evening: Settle in for an unusual night at the Safari de Peaugres (reservation essential), with its Far North atmosphere, in a cabin perched in the heart of the forest, between black bears and arctic wolves. Enjoy a gourmet basket of local produce.
