How to get there - Amman

Arrival in Amman

By the time you get through the border formalities and the capital 's traffic jams if you arrive during the day, you'll arrive at your hotel in the early evening, or even later. Go out for dinner at a Jordanian restaurant to get acclimated. If you arrive early in the morning, you can visit the Citadel and theAmphitheater.

Amman

Steps: Petra

One day is enough for a complete visit of the Jordanian capital. Start with the Citadel, then the RomanAmphitheater and the Nymphaeum. Lunch in old Amman. Visit the Jordan Museum and an art gallery or the Wild Jordan offices if you organize your own tours. Overnight in Amman.

Iraq al-Amir, Qasr al-Abed and As-Salt

Steps: As-Salt

Drive through theIraq al-Amir Valley, which starts at the gates ofAmman, to the 2nd century al-Abed Castle, the only remnant of the Greek period in Jordan. Continue to the small town ofAs-Salt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. Visit the Royal Automobile Museum on your way back to the capital. Dinner in the trendy Rainbow Street area.

Jerash and Ajloun

Steps: Ajloun

Take the road to Jerash, the ancient Roman city belonging to the Decapolis. Its numerous vestiges will keep you for 3 to 4 hours. Continue to Ajloun and its 12th century Ayyubid castle. Have lunch or take a break at the wonderful Summaga Cafe, located in the visitors' parking lot. Overnight in a hotel in Ajloun or in the Ajloun Reserve.

From Ajloun to the Yarmouk valley

Umm Qais.

Steps: Pella

Start the day with a hike in the Ajloun Forest Reserve or in the surrounding countryside. Drive to Pella, an ancient city of the Roman Decapolis, less well preserved than Jerash, but also less touristy. Drive north up the Jordan Valley to theAl-Himma Springs on the Syrian border.

Umm Qais, Abila and Umm al-Jimal

Steps: Umm Al-Jimal

Umm Qais, the ancient Gadara, was also part of the Roman Decapolis. The vast archaeological site includes some interesting remains although it has suffered greatly from earthquakes and the Israeli army. Then take the road to Abila, which was connected to Gadara by a Roman road and aqueduct. Finally, drive to Umm el-Jimal and its ancient city.

The castles of the desert and Azraq

This day tour will take you along the roads of northeastern Jordan, to the edge of the desert and its ancient Arab castles. Most of them were built on the ruins of Roman fortresses, which formed a defensive line on the eastern flank of the Arabian Province. Be sure to stop at theAzraq Reserve, a unique wetland in Jordan. Overnight in Amman.

The Kings' Route - from Amman to Madaba

Head towards the Dead Sea and turn off at Al-Rama to climb to the top of Mount Nebo. Take time to visit the ruins of the churches of Saints Lot and Procopius for the view, then drive the few kilometers to Madaba. In the afternoon, the amazing Mosaic Map of Palestine and the ruins of Byzantine churches. Overnight in Madaba.

The Road of the Kings - from Madaba to Dana

Steps: Dana

Take the schoolchildren's road to the springs of Ma'in, then to the fortress of Macheronte to enjoy the magnificent views. Follow the Kings' Road to Kerak and its impressive fortress. Continue to the Dana Reserve with a stop at Khirbet al-Dharieh. Please note that if you stay at the Feynan Ecolodge, you will have to turn off at Tafilah towards the Dead Sea.

Dana Nature Reserve

The Dana Biosphere Reserve is the largest natural park in Jordan. There are many hiking trails, from easy to strenuous, through beautiful mountain and canyon landscapes for a few hours or a day. You stay in the partly ruined village of Dana or at the beautiful Feynan Ecolodge, managed by the RSCN.

From Dana to Petra

Steps: Shobak

You have time for a short morning hike in Dana before heading to Shobak Castle, a fortress built by the Crusaders. While its wall is impressive, its interior is badly deteriorated. Continue on to Al-Beidah, its neolithic village and the site of Little Petra, a pleasant introduction to Nabatean architecture.

For your first day in Petra, hire a guide to walk the Main Trail and have the most important sites of the ancient Nabatean capital explained to you along the way. You'll cross the Siq, come upon the Treasury, walk down the Street of the Facades and continue to the Qasr al-Bint. Continue to the Monastery, either on foot or by donkey.

Rise at dawn to be among the first to enter Petra and enjoy the serenity of the desert Siq. Descend quietly to the Great Temple and have breakfast in the ruins. Then climb up to the High Place of Sacrifice along the marked path. Continue your visit with the Royal Tombs and climb to the top of Al-Khubtha if you have any energy left.

Day 14

Petra (3)

Hike with a guide along the paths left untouched by tourists. You can hike from the Tomb of the Obelisks to the Treasury without using the Siq, walk from Al-Beidah to the Monastery and then revisit the sites that impressed you or explore Wadi Sabra. If it's a good day, finish off with the Petra by Night show.

From Petra to Wadi Rum

It's only a two-hour drive from the ancient Nabatean capital to the formidable desert of Wadi Rum. Take possession of your base camp at the foot of a jebel, luxury or roots version. Then set off to explore the impressive geological formations of this lunar desert. Ask your Bedouin guide to include tea at sunset.

If you still have enough strength, plan a day of hiking in the desert, preferably in a quiet area, with a night in a bivouac under the stars. And if you are tired of walking, you can take a camel ride and feel like Lawrence of Arabia conquering the "Valley of the Moon". The climbing amateurs will take advantage of it to offer themselves a vertical.

From Wadi Rum to Aqaba

From the desert to the sea, it's only an hour's drive... absolutely spectacular. If you are passionate about diving, you will choose a small hotel with a pool in the Bedouin Village, the Jordanian meeting place for divers. If you are more of a book lover, you can choose between the resorts of Tala Bay or the luxury hotels ofAqaba.

Aqaba

After spending days kicking up dust in archaeological sites and deserts, there's nothing like a lazy day in Aqaba on the Red Sea. If you don't dive, you can admire some of the best preserved coral on the planet by taking a glassboat or snorkeling at the Japanese Garden.

From Aqaba to Wadi Mujib

Take the road through the barren Wadi Araba and along the Israeli border to the Dead Sea. On the way you can stop at the Lowest Point Museum, admire the barren, salt-lined shores of the Dead Sea and take a picture of the statue of Lot. You can swim in the Dead Sea and relax at the Herod Springs. Overnight at the Mujib Chalets.

Wadi Mujib

Steps: Wadi Mujib

Treat yourself to a day of hiking and canyoning in the magnificent Wadi Mujib Canyon. There are several trails of varying difficulty, from a pleasant hike in the gorge, to a more physical one that will take you to the heights and once again offer exceptional views. Overnight at the Mujib Chalets or at one of the resorts north of the Dead Sea.
