Take your time and wander through the heart of the arid valleys - a real change of scenery! - from central Chile before heading back to Valparaiso.
In the footsteps of Pablo Neruda in Valparaiso
Steps: Valparaíso
Valparaiso. Go up the steep alleys of Cerro (hill) Florida to find La Sebastiana, one of the three houses of the late poet Pablo Neruda, a legend in Latin America. The house is perfectly preserved and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. In the afternoon, wander through the streets of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, two hills that form the historical and artistic heart of the city. The view of the old port is fully recommendable.

It is common to meet painters or musicians who are inspired by the landscape. Then, discover the Place d'Armes - going there by tramway is an excellent idea.
Travel to La Serena
Steps: La Serena
Valparaiso. Back on the roads, head north. About 5 hours of travel connect Valparaiso and La Serena, once a land of pirates and now a must for its colonial district. Visit the local craft market - filled with treasures from the Altiplano - and walk barefoot on the pretty beach. Pure relaxation.
Elqui Valley
Steps: Pisco Elqui
The Serena. Head to the Andes mountain range to find a buried treasure: the Elqui Valley. In Pisco Elqui, you can't miss the visit of a local "pisquera", the secret places in which one of Chile's specialities, Pisco (a wine brandy), is conceived.
