Detail of the stay : A week in Slovakia - 7 days
Day 1: Bratislava
Steps: Bratislava
Discover the Slovak capital. The best way to explore this little-known city is to lose yourself in its maze of medieval streets and squares. Head to the castle overlooking the city for exceptional views of the Danube and Austria in the distance. Back in the city center, visit St. Martin's Cathedral , where the kings of Hungary were crowned from 1563 to 1830. Follow in the footsteps of these coronations through the city, using the crown-shaped markers on the ground. Finally, take a seat on one of the many café terraces for a well-deserved local beer.
While many people dislike or are bored by Communist architecture, Bratislava offers a unique opportunity to discover striking examples of functionalism. Cross the UFO bridge to the Petrzalka district, where you'll find yourself immersed in a forest of perfectly identical concrete buildings!
CATHÉDRALE SAINT-MARTIN (DÓM SV. MARTINA)
Day 2: Around Bratislava
Biofarma Priroda is an organic farm built on the site of the former botanical garden created during the Soviet period and soon abandoned to move further into the center of Bratislava. Around 20 km from the center of the capital, accessible by car and even partially by bike, Biofarma's primary aim is to supply its owners' restaurants and pubs with organic bread and cheese. However, the estate is now open to the public, welcoming young and old alike for a breath of fresh air, popular and forgotten Slovak specialities and demonstrations of bread and cheese making. As well as French-bred dairy sheep, the farm is home to other animals rescued from a sometimes tragic fate. An ideal place to escape foreign tourists.
Day 3: Bratislava wine route and surroundings
The region around Bratislava is full of magnificent castles and vineyards that are unfairly underestimated.
Take a leisurely stroll through the hills of the Little Carpathians that stretch northeast from the capital to Modra, Slovakia's wine center.
Vertiginously suspended on a cliffside, the magnificent Devin Castle is an ideal stop-off point to discover a medieval fort.
CHÂTEAU DE DEVÍN (HRAD DEVÍN)
Day 4: Malá Fatra
The university town of Žilina is a pleasant base from which to explore the wonders of the surrounding area.
The Malá Fatra Nature Park is a harbinger of the High Tatras to come: small, uninhabited mountains, lush greenery and an abundance of flora and fauna. Discover the local Robin Hood, Juraj Janosik, an illustrious thief who robbed the rich to give to the poor.
Day 5: Vlkolínec
Steps: Martin
After a detour to Martin, pivotal in the emergence of patriotism and Slovakia's first nationalist upheavals, you're off to the incredible UNESCO World Heritage village of Vlkolínec. Made up of some forty folk houses built entirely of wood, the village clings beautifully to the green hills.
Day 6: Banská Bystrica
Steps: Banská Bystrica
A mining town at the heart of a region that produced 40% of Europe's gold in the 15th century, Banská Bystrica today stretches lasciviously through a maze of small pedestrian streets. A student town with a relaxed atmosphere, don't miss its main square Namestie SNP and the Matejov dom (Matthias's house), a magnificent six-storey Gothic mansion.
Day 7: Banska Stiavnica
Steps: Banská Štiavnica
54 kilometers from Banska Bystrica lies Banska Stiavnica, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in Slovakia, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This former gold and silver mining town was one of the richest in the Hungarian kingdom as early as the 13th century.
