Discovering street art in Buenos Aires
Steps: Buenos Aires
In the north of the city, a little off the beaten track, you'll encounter colorful, offbeat street art in the neighborhoods of Colegiales, Chacarita, Villa Crespo, Villa Urquiza and Palermo Hollywood. In the south, in addition to the colorful houses of La Boca and Barracas, giant murals - often politically inspired but usually with a touch of humor - adorn private and public buildings. Buenos Aires boasts the world's longest mural by a single artist, El Regreso de Quinquela. The 2,000-square-meter masterpiece, by artist Alfredo "El Pelado" Segatori, can be found on Lavadero and San Antonio streets, in the Barracas district just outside La Boca. It is a tribute to the revered local painter, Benito Quinquela Martín (1890-1977), famous for his depictions of La Boca, and depicts the rigors of daily life for the inhabitants of this colorful port district.
