Stay : 8 days Route du Lemosho

More recent, this road is more secluded and undoubtedly more beautiful, but it is slightly longer and more expensive. It starts on the western side of the mountain, a longer distance from the town at Londorossi Gate, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira road. On the third day, it crosses the Shira plateau to join the Machame road at Lava Tower, then descends via the southern circuit to the Barranco valley. You may be lucky enough to spot a buffalo, elephant or other animal. This route has a higher summit success rate, as it allows more time for acclimatization.

Day 1: De Londrossi Gate à Mti Mkubwa Camp

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 2389 m to 2785 m

Departure from Moshi/Arusha for the gateway to Kilimanjaro National Park. We'll wait patiently for our permits to be issued, watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead. While your guide talks you through the local flora and fauna, you'll be able to admire the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails. The trail can be muddy and slippery at these low altitudes. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended.

Day 2: From Mti Mkubwa camp to Shira 1 camp

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 2785m to 3504m

After a restorative night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, we leave the rainforest and continue on an ascending trail. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the edge of the Shira plateau. Temperatures start to drop.

Day 3: From Shira 1 camp to Shira hut

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 3504m to 3895m

We spend the whole day exploring the Shira plateau. We walk gently eastwards towards the icy peak of Kibo, cross the plateau and descend to Shira Camp 2, located in the moorland meadows near a stream. We then move on to Moir Hut, a little-visited spot at the foot of Lent Hills. Lent Hills offers a wide variety of hikes, making it an excellent opportunity for acclimatization. Shira is one of the world's highest plateaus.

Day 4: From Shira Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 3895m to 3986m

Although you finish the day at roughly the same altitude as at the start, this day is essential for acclimatization. Continuing eastwards up a ridge from the Shira plateau, we pass the junction to Kibo Peak before turning southeast towards the lava tower. We reach a second junction shortly after the tower, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We then continue our descent to Camp Barranco, where we spend the night.

Day 5: From Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 3986m to 4034m

After breakfast, we continue on a steep ridge to the adventurous Barranco wall, which leads to the Karanga valley and the junction with the Mweka trail. It's one of the most impressive days to see the power, agility and strength of your team traverse this wall with apparent ease. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day 6: Hiking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 4034m to 4662m

We continue climbing towards Barafu camp, and once there, you've completed the southern circuit, which offers breathtaking views of the summit from different angles. We'll eat early and rest before the summit night. Overnight at Barafu camp.

Day 7: From Barafu camp at the summit to Mweka camp

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 4662m to 5895m to 3106m

Excitement builds as morning approaches, with departure between midnight and 2am. This is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the trip.

We continue to climb between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, trying to stay warm while concentrating on the incredible sense of achievement that awaits us. We climb through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim, heading north-west, following a winding movement. You'll be rewarded with a spectacular sunrise during your brief stay here. Faster hikers can catch a glimpse of the sunrise from the summit. On the final hour-long ascent to Uhuru Peak, you'll almost certainly encounter snow.

You have now reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent!

After photos, celebrations and perhaps a few tears of joy, we take a few moments to appreciate this incredible achievement. We begin our ascent towards Camp Mweka, pausing for lunch and a short rest in Barafu. We strongly recommend wearing gaiters and trekking poles due to the uncooperative gravel and volcanic ash. Enjoy a well-deserved rest on your last evening on the mountain. You'll spend the night at Mweka Camp.

Day 8: From Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Steps: Kilimandjaro

Altitude: 3106m to 1633m

After breakfast and a team-bonding ceremony, it's time to say goodbye. We head to the Mweka park gate to collect your climbing certificates. Due to the warmer weather, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep, and we strongly recommend that you wear gaiters and trekking poles. A vehicle will be waiting for you in the village of Mweka to take you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha
