Since the passing of the Taubira law in 2001, slavery has been recognized as a crime against humanity and 10 May has since become the "day of remembrance, the slave trade, slavery and their abolition". A national date in addition to the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, established by UNESCO in 1998 and celebrated on 23 August.
