While the restaurants close around midnight, there's no real closing time for the clubs: the party goes on all night long, as long as the dance floor is lively! Ivoirians love to get drunk and go out in all the country's cities.

Abidjan's hippest new clubs must be reserved in advance, otherwise you won't have a seat at a table and won't be able to get in. On the other hand, entry is free, subject only to consumption at the table.

Night transport

We recommend taking Yango or Heetch VTCs to get around at night, as they are safer than metered cabs, and can be traced reliably.

What's very local

Maquis and clubs are all the rage in Côte d'Ivoire, and correspond to practices that are firmly rooted in local customs. The proliferation of lounges, which has been perceptible in recent years and has been amplified by the economic upturn, is part of a long-standing tradition of afterwork that is typically Ivorian: the maquis or bar or lounge functions as an annex to the home, where friends can meet up to relax over a drink, a decompression zone between work and home, a habit that is not abandoned and that inevitably takes place somewhere between "metro" (traffic jams: you stop for a drink and/or a bite to eat while waiting for them to pass), work and bed. In short: a dimension of urban culture in Côte d'Ivoire, in turn a space of power, self-representation and the construction of social capital around business and friendships, for these places and practices of partying, chilling and socio-cultural and political gregariousness of varying standings that also reflect Abidjan's cosmopolitan nature and its vocation as a city open to the outside world, as well as the increasing (not to say galloping) globalization of the different lifestyles of Ivorians.
