POPO CARNAVAL
Popo is an Abouré word meaning "mask". It is celebrated every year in Bonoua over two weeks, starting on Easter Monday. Torchlight parades, traditional beauty contests, street theater and dancing precede the event, which is accompanied by a gastronomic, commercial and, above all, cultural integration village during the two weeks of festivities. Saturday: a parade of masked men, women and children (giant puppets, floats, folk dances, brass bands, etc.), punctuated by dances and burlesque scenes. Sunday: ancestral worship, family and generational reunions. It has become famous for its colorful parade, eccentric transvestites and grand popular ball after the cremation of King Popo (a large papier-mâché monster).
