WWF
WWF has been present in Gabon since 1986. This presence became effective in 1991, the year of signing a headquarters agreement with the Gabonese authorities. Over the years, WWF has become one of the Gabonese Government's key conservation partners, providing its support in:
the implementation of its forestry and environmental policy.
management of sites with exceptional biodiversity.
promoting sustainable management in the forestry sector.
capacity-building at the national level and the fight against poverty.
implementation of environmental education.
the development of cross-border conservation in Cameroon-Congo-Gabon interactive.
WWF is currently involved in the periphery of Gabon's protected areas (Minkébé Park and Lopé axis) to promote the management of community forests and develop artisanal exploitation for the benefit of local populations alone. It also aims to create partnerships with the forest sector in the consideration of social and wildlife aspects as components of the plans for development, with a view to achieving credible certification and enabling local populations - breeders, Baka Pygmies, farmers'and fishermen's associations - to play a role in the management of natural resources and the resulting income.
WWF helped to create the Edzengui association, which aims to promote cultural values and ecological knowledge of the Baka Pygmies in the Minkébé area. WWF is also working closely with international conservation organizations such as WCS and IUCN.
