In Yaoundé, the country's administrative capital and seat of its institutions, the national holiday is celebrated in style with a parade down the Boulevard du 20 mai. Nearly 5,000 soldiers and civilians march in step along the boulevard, saluting a tradition dating back to the early 1970s and instituted by President Ahidjo. This is, of course, the highlight of the celebration.
