Practical information : Accomodation Democratic Republic Of The Congo
Budget & Tips
There's no shortage of accommodation options: hotels, guest-houses, flats, residences... But it's not always easy to find democratically priced accommodation (under $50) with the guarantee of a decent level of service and quality. In recent years, hotels have sprung up everywhere, sometimes in an anarchic fashion. It's not easy to find your way around the plethora of hotels on offer, with prices that are sometimes surprisingly low for a standard of comfort that ranges from uneven to very basic... With the exception of the big names, make sure there's running water, visit the sanitary facilities, find out if there's a generator to replace the power cuts, etc. And negotiate the price according to the number of beds you'll need. In the big hotels and international chains, no problem. B&Bs are appearing more and more and are often good hospitality options.
To be booked
Reservations are essential, especially around tourist attractions. Reservations can be made over the Internet in well-established establishments, or by telephone if the place doesn't have an Internet connection, which is quite common. Please note that the telephone number you see on the Internet or in the Petit Futé is often wrong. The reason for this is that landline telephony does not exist, and some of the numbers given are those of a receptionist or manager who is no longer in post.
What's very local
Missions (especially catholic ones) remain good alternatives for accommodation. Not very luxurious but not expensive and welcoming, clean, quiet and often with hearty meals with local products.
For food lovers
If the hotel does not provide a buffet breakfast but you love local fruit, ask the day before (insist) to be sure to have some with or without the traditional omelet and sandwich bread.
Smokers
It is forbidden to smoke in hotel rooms. In guest houses and bungalows, prefer the patio or the barza.
